Barlow Lenses: When They Double Your Eyepieces and When They Waste Them

A Barlow multiplies the magnification of whatever eyepiece sits in it. That is genuinely useful in the middle of a range and completely pointless at the short end, and one calculation tells you which you are about to do.

A Barlow lens goes between your eyepiece and the telescope and multiplies the magnification. A 2x Barlow makes a 25mm eyepiece behave like a 12.5mm one, so a three-eyepiece case becomes six magnifications for the price of one accessory.

That is the pitch, the arithmetic is real, and it comes with a hard edge that the packaging never mentions: a Barlow can take you past what your aperture supports, and it will do it happily.

The one calculation that decides it

What a Barlow does to your shortest eyepiece

effective focal length = eyepiece focal length / Barlow factor

A 10mm eyepiece in a 2x Barlow behaves as 5mm. In a 3x Barlow, as 3.3mm.

Then feed that into the usual magnification formula: telescope focal length divided by the effective eyepiece focal length. The magnification calculator will run both steps on your own numbers.

Now compare the result against the ceiling your aperture sets, which is roughly two times the aperture in millimeters. That comparison is the whole decision.

Where a Barlow genuinely earns its place

  • Filling a gap in the middle. If you own a 25mm and a 10mm, a 2x Barlow gives you 12.5mm and 5mm, and the 12.5mm sits neatly in the hole between them.
  • On a long-focal-ratio telescope with a big aperture. An f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain with 150mm of aperture has plenty of headroom, so the Barlow lands inside the useful range rather than past it.
  • When one good eyepiece is better than two mediocre ones. A quality eyepiece plus a quality Barlow can outperform two cheaper eyepieces covering the same two magnifications.
  • Keeping eye relief. A 12mm eyepiece Barlowed to 6mm keeps the 12mm's comfortable eye relief, where a true 6mm eyepiece would put your eye almost against the glass. This matters a lot if you wear glasses.

That last one is underrated and it is the reason experienced observers keep a Barlow even when they own plenty of eyepieces. Short focal lengths in simple designs have punishing eye relief; a Barlow gets the magnification without it.

Where it does not

  • On the shortest eyepiece you own. That is the combination that produces empty magnification on almost every beginner telescope, and it is the first thing most people try.
  • On a small aperture. Below about 100mm the ceiling arrives so quickly that a Barlow has almost nowhere useful to go.
  • As a substitute for aperture. No Barlow adds detail. It spreads the detail your mirror already collected over a larger, dimmer image.
  • At 3x, usually. A 3x Barlow overshoots the ceiling on nearly every telescope on this site. 2x is the factor that fits beginner apertures.

What to look for in one

A Barlow is extra glass in the light path, which always costs a little contrast. How much depends on the construction, and this is one accessory where the cheap version is meaningfully worse than the good one.

  1. Element count. A two-element Barlow is the budget design and it introduces visible false color at the edges. Three elements in two groups, described as apochromatic, is the standard worth paying for.
  2. Coatings. Fully multi-coated, meaning every air-to-glass surface is coated, not just the outer ones.
  3. Filter threads. A Barlow threaded for 1.25-inch filters lets a moon filter live on the Barlow while you swap eyepieces above it, which saves unscrewing things in the dark.
  4. Focuser travel. A Barlow moves the focus point outward. Some telescopes, particularly Newtonians with short focusers, cannot reach focus with one fitted. Check before buying if you can.

A Barlow multiplies the magnification of whatever eyepiece sits in it. At 2x, a 25mm eyepiece behaves like a 12.5mm one and a 10mm behaves like a 5mm, so a three-eyepiece case becomes a six-magnification case for the price of one accessory.

That arithmetic is real, and it has a hard edge. On a 700mm f/10 refractor with a 70mm objective, a 10mm eyepiece Barlowed to an effective 5mm gives 140x, which is exactly the 2x-aperture ceiling for 70mm. Anything shorter than that behind the Barlow is empty magnification, and the Barlow will happily produce it.

Three elements in two groups is a better construction than the two-element Barlows bundled in budget kits. The optical cost of a cheap Barlow is real: it is extra glass in the light path, and poor glass shows as softness and false color exactly where you were trying to gain detail.

The filter thread is the quietly useful feature. A moon filter on the Barlow stays put while you swap eyepieces above it, rather than being unscrewed and rescrewed in the dark.

Celestron Eyepiece, Barlow and Filter Kit (1.25")

Five Plossl eyepieces from 32mm down to 6mm plus a 2x Barlow. This is the accessory that actually changes what you see.

Magnification is telescope focal length divided by eyepiece focal length, so this kit is the variable in that equation. On a 650mm f/5 telescope the 32mm gives 20x, the 13mm gives 50x and the 6mm gives 108x. On a 1200mm Dobsonian the same three give 38x, 92x and 200x.

The 2x Barlow halves every eyepiece's effective focal length, which is where the ten-eyepieces-in-one claim comes from. It is true arithmetic, but a Barlow on a 6mm eyepiece produces 3mm, and on most beginner telescopes 3mm is beyond the useful magnification the aperture supports.

The useful lesson is that the two eyepieces in the telescope's box are usually the two least considered items in it. A 32mm Plossl in a fast Dobsonian gives a genuinely wide, bright field that no bundled eyepiece will match.

A moon filter is not optional at full Moon in anything over about 100mm. The Moon at 130mm is uncomfortably bright, and that is not a figure of speech.

  • Plossl is a well-corrected classic design at a price where the alternatives are not
  • The moon filter alone earns its place in anything over 100mm

  • The shortest eyepieces exceed the useful magnification of a small telescope

This is the sensible kit for a 70mm to 114mm telescope, where the five-eyepiece set's shortest focal lengths would exceed the useful magnification the aperture supports anyway.

On a 700mm f/10 refractor, a 2x Barlow on a 10mm eyepiece gives 140x, which is exactly the 2x-aperture ceiling for a 70mm objective. There is nothing left to gain past that, and a kit that stops there is a kit sized to the telescope.

The filters are the same colored planetary set as the larger kit, and they see the same modest amount of use.

Barlow or another eyepiece?

If you own two eyepieces and want more range, a Barlow is usually the better first purchase: it doubles what you have rather than adding one point. If you own five, another eyepiece is more useful than a Barlow that duplicates magnifications you already reach.

And if you own none beyond the two in the box, buy a good long eyepiece first. A 32mm in a fast telescope gives a wide, bright field that no Barlow can produce and no bundled eyepiece matches. The eyepiece guide works out which focal lengths suit your telescope specifically.

Questions people actually ask

What does a Barlow lens do?

It multiplies the magnification of whatever eyepiece is used with it. A 2x Barlow makes a 25mm eyepiece behave like a 12.5mm one, so it effectively doubles the number of magnifications your eyepiece set can reach.

Is a Barlow lens worth it?

It is if your telescope has headroom above its current magnifications. Work out the effective focal length, divide your telescope's focal length by it, and compare that with two times your aperture in millimeters. Inside the ceiling it is useful; past it, it is empty magnification.

Should I buy a 2x or 3x Barlow?

2x on almost any beginner telescope. A 3x overshoots the useful magnification ceiling on nearly every aperture under 200mm, so it produces a bigger, dimmer image with no more detail in it.

Does a Barlow lens reduce image quality?

A little, because it adds glass to the light path. A three-element apochromatic Barlow with full multi-coating costs very little contrast; a cheap two-element one introduces visible false color, especially toward the edge of the field.

Can I use a Barlow with any eyepiece?

Any eyepiece with a matching barrel size, which for beginner telescopes means 1.25 inch. The question is not whether it fits but whether the resulting magnification stays inside what your aperture supports.

Why will my telescope not focus with a Barlow fitted?

Because a Barlow moves the focus point outward and some telescopes do not have enough focuser travel to reach it. It is most common on Newtonian reflectors with short focusers, and there is no fix beyond removing the Barlow.
