What to Avoid When Buying a First Telescope
Almost every disappointing first telescope fails in one of six ways, and all six are visible from the listing if you know what to look at.

A first telescope usually disappoints for one of six reasons, and none of them is bad luck. Every one is visible in the product listing before the money is spent.
1. The magnification claim on the box
A box advertising 525x is telling you it ships a very short eyepiece. It is not telling you anything about the optics, because magnification is set by the eyepiece and not by the telescope.

A 60mm telescope: 60 x 2 = 120x. A 70mm telescope: 70 x 2 = 140x.
At 525x on a 60mm objective the image is a dim, blurred, wobbling smear. The number is real; it is just useless. The magnification myth explains the physics.
2. A tripod chosen to hit a price
Thin aluminum legs, plastic joints and a spindly accessory tray produce an image that shakes for several seconds after every touch. At 100x a wobble that settles in three seconds makes focusing genuinely impossible, and the buyer concludes the optics are bad when the optics were fine.
This is the single strongest argument for a Dobsonian at the beginner end: there is no tripod, so there is nothing to shake. It is also why a heavier telescope is often the better buy at the same price.
3. An equatorial mount nobody explained
A German equatorial mount is the right tool for tracking, and it is genuinely bewildering on night one. It has two axes set at an angle to the ground, it has to be roughly aligned with the celestial pole before its motions make sense, and until then the telescope appears to swing in directions that have no relation to the sky.
A gift recipient who has never seen one usually concludes it is broken. If the recipient is a beginner, an alt-azimuth mount or a Dobsonian base is the safer purchase by a wide margin, even at a cost in aperture.
4. Aperture below 70mm
Below 70mm a telescope struggles to beat a decent pair of binoculars, and binoculars are easier to hold, easier to point and useful in daylight. A 60mm department-store refractor on a shaking tripod is worse in every practical respect than 70mm binoculars at the same price.
That is not a rhetorical comparison. Binoculars against a telescope makes the case with the numbers, and for a lot of gift budgets binoculars are the honest recommendation.
5. A bundled camera or smartphone gimmick
A camera included with a beginner telescope is almost always a low-resolution sensor that a modern phone held to the eyepiece beats comfortably. It is there to add a bullet to the listing.
The same is true of most electronic extras at this price. Money spent on a bundled accessory is money not spent on the mirror, and the mirror is the only part that changes what you can see.
6. A telescope nobody can lift or store
The opposite failure, and a real one. A 10-inch Dobsonian bought by somebody who lives on the third floor without a lift is a beautiful instrument that goes outside twice.
Aperture is the right thing to optimize, right up until the point where it stops the telescope leaving the house. That crossover is different for everybody, which is why how to choose asks about storage before it asks about budget.
What good looks like at three price points
The three telescopes below are the honest floor, middle and value picks. Each one avoids all six traps: a real aperture, a mount with nothing to shake, no advertised magnification the optics cannot support, and nothing bundled that is not worth having.

Celestron publishes 180x as this telescope’s highest useful magnification. Our figure is 152x, from two times the aperture in millimeters. The gap of 28x comes from the slightly more generous per-inch constant makers use. Neither number describes a typical night: the atmosphere usually settles the question well below both.
Worked example: a 25mm eyepiece in this telescope gives 300mm ÷ 25mm = 12x.
76mm is small, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise. What it is not is a toy: the mirror is real, the mount is a proper Dobsonian, and it will show the Moon's craters and Jupiter's moons.
Two times 76mm gives 152x of useful magnification. Celestron publishes 180x. Either figure demolishes the 525x printed on the box of the department-store scope sitting beside it at the same price.
The f/3.95 focal ratio is very fast, which is hard on a spherical mirror and hard on cheap eyepieces. Expect softness at the edge of the field and do not expect much above about 60x to 75x in practice.
The right way to think about it: this is a lot better than nothing, it is enormously better than a 60mm toy scope on a plastic tripod, and it is meaningfully worse than the 130mm tabletop Dobsonian that costs roughly three times as much.

Worked example: a 25mm eyepiece in this telescope gives 650mm ÷ 25mm = 26x.
This is the aperture-per-dollar champion of the beginner shelf and it is not close. You get the same 130mm parabolic mirror found in telescopes at twice the price, and you get it without paying for a tripod, a slow-motion assembly or a hand controller.
Two times 130mm is 260x of useful magnification. Dawes' limit at 130mm works out to 116 divided by 130, which is 0.89 arcseconds. The Cassini division in Saturn's rings spans roughly 0.7 arcseconds at its widest, so this telescope sits right at the edge of showing it on a still night and will show the rings themselves easily.
The catch is the word tabletop. It needs a surface at roughly chest height when you are seated. A garden table works, a plastic patio chair does not, and buying one without thinking about where it will stand is the single most common regret with this design.
The tube collapses, which is what makes it live in a cupboard rather than a garage. That matters more than it sounds: the telescope you can carry outside in one trip is the telescope you use.

70mm is the floor. Below it a telescope struggles to beat a decent pair of binoculars, and that is a real comparison rather than a rhetorical one.
Two times 70mm gives 140x of useful magnification. Celestron publishes 165x for this tube. Either way, a box on the same shelf advertising 525x is describing an eyepiece swap, not an optical capability.
At f/10 the long focal length does the refractor's classic favor: it is forgiving of cheap eyepieces and it produces high-contrast views of the Moon and the bright planets. Deep-sky objects are mostly beyond it, and it is better to know that going in.
Its published Dawes limit of 1.66 arcseconds means it will not split the tightest doubles or show the Cassini division. It will show the rings, four moons of Jupiter, the phases of Venus, and a lunar terminator that people remember for years.
What it does well
- Sealed tube: no collimation, no mirror cleaning, essentially no maintenance
- Light enough that carrying it outside is never the reason it stays indoors
- The f/10 focal ratio is forgiving of the budget eyepieces it ships with
- Genuinely good on the Moon and the bright planets, which is what most first-timers actually look at

- 70mm collects too little light for galaxies and most nebulae
- The alt-azimuth mount has no slow-motion control on the LT version
- Chromatic aberration puts a faint violet fringe on very bright objects
Skip this one if: Skip it if what you actually want is deep sky. No amount of eyepiece will make 70mm show you a spiral arm.
Questions people actually ask
What telescopes should beginners avoid?
Any telescope advertising a magnification more than about twice its aperture in millimeters, anything under 70mm of aperture, anything on a visibly thin tripod, and, for a complete beginner, anything on a German equatorial mount that nobody will explain.
Are cheap telescopes worth it?
Under about a hundred dollars a real telescope exists, but the shelf around it is mostly toys. A 76mm tabletop Dobsonian is genuine; a 60mm refractor on a plastic tripod advertising 525x is not. Is a cheap telescope worth it works through the bracket.
Why does my telescope show everything upside down?
